The Lorius genus contains six medium sized (26-31 cm) parrots, that are native in a range from Moluccas in Indonesia through New Guinea to the Solomon Islands.
Like other lorikeets they have a very special tongue with several small hairs at the tip of the tongue, that are used for gathering pollen and nectar from flowers.
All species have an overall red plumage with green wings; the top of the head is black except for the Chattering Lory, which have a red head.
