Encyclopedia of Parrots
Psephotus is a monotypic genus consisting only of the Red-rumped parrot with two subspecies.
The Red-rumped Parrot was originally described by the English ornithologist John Gould in 1838 and categorized as Platycercus haematonotus.
It was later moved to the Psephotus genus together with Mulga Parrot, Golden-shouldered Parrot, Hooded Parrot and Paradise Parrot.
Recent DNA research resulted in these species being moved to the Psephotellus genus leaving only the Red-rumped Parrot in the Psephotus genus.
