Unsafe household chemicals and materials

Parrots are very intelligent and curious birds so be very careful where you keep your household chemicals! It is best to keep in another room with the door closed as some parrots are known to be very talented at escaping the cage (some can easily open the hatch to the cage if not locked).

Be careful to avoid overheating your Non-Stick kitchenware if your parrots are in or near the kitchen – the fumes are very toxic to parrots! Make sure you have good ventilation when cooking or keep pet parrots far away from the kitchen!

Also playing and cuddling with your parrot(s) in a cosy environment with scented candles should be avoided!

Also avoid smoking in the same room as your pet parrot – it can be fatal!

When my Timneh African Grey Parrot was a juvenile I was out working in the garden for a few hours while my wife was sitting inside talking with a friend and my parrot was sitting in the next room listening to the two women talking and laughing while smoking several cigarettes. When I got back inside I immediately noticed my parrot was having trouble breathing and I rushed to the veterinarian. With X-Rays, blood samples, medicine etc. those smokes turned out to be very expensive! But fortunately the parrot survived – and my wife was banned from smoking indoor since that day!
